CPI-M cautious on Mayawati as Prime Ministerial candidate
The CPI-M, which is sidestepping the issue of projecting Mayawati as the Prime Ministerial candidate, appears doubly cautious in the matter as the BSP chief had thrice joined hands with the BJP in the past.

NEW DELHI : The CPI-M, which is sidestepping the issue of projecting Mayawati as the Prime Ministerial candidate, appears doubly cautious in the matter as the BSP chief had thrice joined hands with the BJP in the past.
"Our attitude towards other non-Congress and non-BJP parties will be determined by their attitude to the BJP or the Congress," the Central Committee of the party which met here recently, has decided.
Echoing the decision, a senior leader said the party is moving "very cautiously" with regard to its relationship with Mayawati as she is an "unpredictable person" who is unlikely to enter into a pre-poll alliance.
"Our aim is to prevent Mayawati from going to the BJP camp," the leader said.
The BSP entered the CPI-M game plan last month only after Samajwadi Party, a longtime Left ally, announced support for the nuclear deal and the UPA government.
CPI-M general secretary Prakash Karat made a surprise visit to Mayawati's residence here on July 13.
As regards allies of the Congress in the UPA, the major Left party says that it would decide the nature of ties with them on the basis of their relationship with the Congress.
On the line to be adopted with regard to forthcoming elections, the party said it will work to "isolate the BJP" which spearheads "communal forces" and "also oppose the Congress" which has been instrumental in forging a strategic alliance with the United States.
