NEW DELHI: The Communist Party of India (CPI) has disapproved of party leader D Raja meeting Justice Jasti Chelameswar on Friday soon after four senior judges of the Supreme Court raised the banner of revolt against the functioning of the Chief Justice of India at a joint press conference.

CPI general secretary S Sudhakar Reddy told ET that the party did not authorise or approve of the conduct of Raja, a member of the CPI central secretariat and the Rajya Sabha. “The CPI had not authorised D Raja to meet Justice Chelameswar on Friday. The party does not approve of Raja’s action. Let me make it clear that Raja went in his personal capacity, not as a representative of the CPI. The party feels some controversy that followed Raja’s visit (to the judge’s house) could have been totally avoided,” Reddy said.

However, he said, the four judges were “absolutely right” in placing their grievances at a press conference “after their attempts to persuade the chief justice had failed”.
