CPI criticises govt's steps to tackle price rise
Criticising measures taken by the UPA government in checking surging prices of essential commodities, the CPI on Friday sought an immediate halt in forward trading of foodgrains and stringent action against hoarding.

NEW DELHI: Criticising measures taken by the UPA government in checking surging prices of essential commodities, the CPI on Friday sought an immediate halt in forward trading of foodgrains and stringent action against hoarding.
The party, which provides outside support to the Central government, also demanded that immediate steps should be taken to revive, strengthen and streamline the Public Distribution System (PDS).
"The Left parties have drawn attention to this serious situation and insisted what should be taken during the Coordination Committee meeting. However, the steps announced are too little, if not also too late," it said in a statement.
The government has waited till the burden on the poor and toiling people has become unbearable, it added.
"The wrong market-oriented policies are responsible for going back to the old days of dependence on import of food grains, pulses, sugar etc. The food security of our people has been gravely undermined as a result of such policies," it said.
The present policy of forward trading should be given up as it at the root of hoarding. Government should go for procurement of food grains from the farmers rather than relying on larger imports including by private traders, the statement said.
"Government has not taken people into confidence about its failure to procure food grains and to build up stocks....it should initiate stringent measures and penal action against hoarding," the party said. It also asked the government to use fair price shops to supply wheat, rice, pulses, sugar and edible oil to consumers.
