Live: PM Modi proposes CP Radhakrishnan’s name for Vice President in Parliament
New Delhi: NDA candidate CP Radhakrishnan filed his nomination papers for the post of Vice President of India on Wednesday, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi as proposer in one of the four sets of papers submitted to the Rajya Sabha Secretary General PC Modi.

Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP Chief JP Nadda and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari accompanied Radhakrishnan to the Secretary General's office in the new Parliament building. NDA partners were represented by Rajiv Ranjan (Lallan) Singh, Sanjay Jha (both JDU), Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu (TDP), Chirag Paswan (LJP-RV), Anupriya Patel (Apna Dal-S), Jitan Ram Manjhi (HAM), HD Kumaraswamy (JDS), Pratap Rao Jadhav, Srikant Shinde (both Shiv Sena), M Thambidurai (AIADMK), Praful Patel (NCP), Ramdas Athavale (RPI-A), Jayant Chaudhary (RLD), among others.

Sources said four sets of nomination papers with 20 proposers and 20 seconders were submitted on behalf of Radhakrishnan. Prime Minister Modi is the proposer in the first set of papers.

"Along with ministers, party colleagues and NDA leaders, accompanied by Thiru CP Radhakrishnan as he filed his nomination for the post of Vice President of India. The NDA family is confident that he will be an outstanding VP and will enrich our journey towards national progress," Modi said on social media site X.

With the numbers stacked in favour of the NDA, the Vice-Presidential election is now largely symbolic. The Opposition has termed it an ideological fight against the NDA.

Radhakrishnan meets former PM Deve Gowda

Later in the day, Radhakrishnan met former Prime Minister and JDS leader HD Deve Gowda at his residence in the national capital on Wednesday.

Gowda expressed his happiness for Radhakrishnan being selected as the NDA candidate for the VP post.

"CP Radhakrishnan has a lot of experience. He has also served as the Governor of many states. He has been selected by PM Modi, and I am very happy that he has been selected as the NDA candidate for the Vice Presidential post," Deve Gowda said. The Rajya Sabha secretariat, which is conducting the elections this time, has received other nominations as well but these have been found to be invalid on various grounds, including not fulfilling the criteria of having at least 20 proposers and 20 seconders.
