Guwahati: All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) MLA of Dhing Legislative Assembly Constituency of Assam, Aminul Islam, has been sent to 14-day judicial custody after he made communal comments with regard to COVID-19 patients.
An FIR was lodged against the MLA following a video clip where said the quarantine camps where returnees of Tablighi Jamaat in Nizamuddin Markaz were kept is detention camp. He also allegedly said that no one attending the Tablighi Jamaat was infected with COVID-19 and it was just a conspiracy against a particular community. "No person who attended the religious meeting suffered from any disease and alleged that it is grave conspiracy to keep these persons in detention camp," he said.
In Assam out of the 27 positive cases of COVID-19, at least 26 are related Nizamuddin Markaz. An FIR was lodged against Islam for inciting communal tension in a police station in Nagaon.
He was arrested on 1 am on Tuesday and accordingly produced in a local court which sent him to 14-day judicial custody.
Nagaon district Superintendent of Police (SP) Gaurav Abhijit Dilip told mediapersons that Islam was brought for interrogation. “Where he admitted audio clip was made by him and it was his voice. We have taken in procession his mobile phone.”
Aminul Islam, General Secretary of AIUDF, however, said this is MLA's personal comment and AIUDF party has no link with it. “we condemn it and we also feel there are some other MLAs from other parties who have made similar corny, they should also be booked.”
