Covid-19: Karnataka to collect samples of journalists

The directions followed a request from Education Minister S Suresh Kumar who told the CM that the media personnel were also vulnerable because of the nature of their job, and hence, the government could have their samples too tested.

Kumar, who is also the State’s Covid-19 spokesperson, told reporters later that the Information department has already taken steps, and is drawing up a schedule for rolling it out.

After 53 journalists in Mumbai were found positive for Covid-19, Karnataka chief minister BS Yediyurappa on Tuesday directed the Information & Public Relations department to have the media personnel in the state examined for the infection.

The directions followed a request from Education Minister S Suresh Kumar who told the CM that the media personnel were also vulnerable because of the nature of their job, and hence, the government could have their samples too tested.

Kumar, who is also the State’s Covid-19 spokesperson, told reporters later that the Information department has already taken steps, and is drawing up a schedule for rolling it out.


Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal too agreed to a request on Tuesday to arrange for mass test for journalists in Delhi.

After two journalists tested positive in Tamil Nadu on Sunday, the authorities conducted testing on journalists. On Tuesday, 27 journalists at a news channel tested positive for Covid-19, taking the number of journalists testing positive to 30 in the State. The rest of the results had not been released as of print time.
