Court issues notices to five doctors

Five doctors here have been issued notices by the Delhi High Court in connection with the death of their fellow colleague in the hospital where all of them were working.

NEW DELHI: Five doctors here have been issued notices by the Delhi High Court in connection with the death of their fellow colleague in the hospital where all of them were working.

The Additional Sessions Judge Pratibha Rani, while issuing the notices to Dr Vivek Baniyal, Y P Munjal, V K Bindal, Rakesh Gupta and Chander Prakash said, "you people have to appear in the court in person on the next date of hearing on May 20."

According to the prosecution, Subhash Goel, the deceased, was working as an ENT surgeon and consultant in the Sundarlal Jain Hospital in the national capital and was admitted to its ICU after he complained of dizziness on February 5, 1997. His condition deteriorated and he died the next day.

Murarilal Goel, the father of the deceased, alleged that his son died due to the negligence of the hospital and moved the Delhi Court after police refused to lodge an FIR even as an inquiry committee headed by Dr U A Kaul suggested that the hospital did not have latest technology to treat the patients.

The committee was formed on the directions of the then Lt Governor, who received a letter from Murarilal in connection with the case.

Acting on the plea of Murarilal, the Delhi High Court had ordered registration of FIR against the doctors and a detailed investigation into the case.
