Court increases Rathore's sentence to 18 months

A sessions court on Tuesday increased the sentence of former Haryana DGP S P S Rathore from six months to 18 months. Rathore has been taken into custody and is being sent to jail.

Rathore had filed a plea challenging the six-month sentence awarded to him by a CBI court for molesting teenager Ruchika Girhotra.

Ruchika's family and the CBI had also filed petitions seeking enhancement of the sentence to maximum two years.

The court had heard arguments on day-to-day basis from May 3 to 11. The proceedings were held in camera.

Rathore was sentenced to six-month imprisonment on December 21 last year by a CBI court for molesting Ruchika, then aged 14, at Panchkula on August 12, 1990.
