Country receives three per cent less rainfall

Northeastern states like Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Marathawada regions have deficient rainfall this monsoon as the country recorded three per cent less rains than the average.

NEW DELHI: Northeastern states like Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Marathawada regions have deficient rainfall this monsoon as the country recorded three per cent less rains than the average.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said five out of the 36 meteorological sub-divisions in the country have received deficient rainfall this monsoon.

While Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura received 23 per cent less rainfall than the Long Period Average (LPA), West Madhya Pradesh received 21 per cent less rainfall, it said.

Saurashtra and Kutch regions in Gujarat received 24 per cent deficient rainfall, while Marathawada region recorded 24 per cent less monsoon rains.

The percentage of deficient rainfall in the southern state of Kerala was 20, the IMD said.

Meteorological analysis suggests that that the ongoing enhanced rainfall activity over Andhra Pradesh and adjoining Orissa is likely to decrease from today onwards with westward movement of the low pressure area over Telangana and neighbourhood.

However, it said a fresh low pressure area is likely to form over west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal around September 15 and added that it may concentrate into a depression.

The special forecast also said scattered to fairly widespread rainfall activity is likely over Kerala, Maharashtra and south Gujarat region during the first-half of the week.
