Cops probe Assam link of Hizbul youth’s photo

GUWAHATI: Assam police have joined their Jammu and Kashmir counterpart to probe after reports that a youth from the northeastern state has joined the Valley-based militant outfit Hizbul Mujahideen. Photographs of Uzzaman with a rifle in his hand has gone viral on social media.

His family members have identified him. They had filed an FIR as they had not heard from Uzzaman for a while. Uzzaman, who hails from Hojai district had a small business in Kishtwar. Assam Director General of Police Mukesh Sahay told ET, "The state police along with their J&K counterpart are investigating the matter. He went there to work and went missing. We are verifying the credential of this person.”

Uzzaman’s mother, Shahira Khatun said there has been no trace of her son for quite some time now. “We have not been able to contact him since July 2017. If my son is associated with such an organisation, the government can shoot him, I do not need such a son.” A senior police official told ET, “The ministry of home affairs had written a letter to Assam police to verify the credential of Uzzaman.”
