Cops keep eye on militant outfits wooing youth in Assam

They raised slogans that if the government doesn’t pay heed to protests, they will fight for an independent Assam. The cops are also keeping a close watch on militant outfits trying to attract youths.

Union ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has constituted a nine-member committee for implementation of Clause 6 of the Assam Accord, which provides for constitutional, legislative and administrative safeguards to protect the cultural, social, linguistic identity and heritage of the Assamese people.
“Militant outfits might take advantage of the current situation. We have alerted the SPs to maintain highest vigil,” said Bhattacharyya. Incidentally, there has been a spurt in the number of people joining the antitalk ULFA ranks in recent times.
He also said that the central paramilitary forces, which the Assam government has got from the Centre in the run-up to the final draft National Register of Citizens publication in July last year, will be used for counterinsurgency operations, if required. Assam got around 150 companies of para forces for publication of NRC.
