Controversy over International Women Film Festival
The city will host the 3rd International Women's Film Fest from Dec 9, about a month after the Nandigram issue shadowed the Kolkata Film Festival.
"The administration is out to disrupt the festival since most of the intellectuals who desire to join the event had stayed away from the Kolkata Film Festival as a protest against the Left Front government's handling of the situation in Nandigram," festival programme head, Supriya Chatterjee, said.
"A conspiracy has been hatched to jeopardise the festival - first by indirectly disapproving its inauguration by film-maker Aparna Sen at the instance of a major ruling Left Front partner (CPI-M) and then by abruptly cancelling the bookings at the hotel in Salt Lake stadium complex where our delegates are to be accommodated," she alleged.
The 'clear divide' among the Left intellectuals on the Nandigram issue was reflected in last month's Kolkata Film Festival which failed to generate the desired response, she said.
"Most of those intellectuals who stayed away from the Kolkata Film Festival to protest the Nandigram violence including Aparna Sen, theatre personality Saonli Mitra, film makers Satarupra Sanyal and Bratya Basu, have given their consent to join the International Women's Film Fest," she said.
