Constitution Amendment Bill: 'UPA could have tried harder'

The Congress-led UPA government could have "done more" for the passage of the Constitution Amendment Bill in the Lok Sabha.

JAIPUR: The Congress-led UPA government could have "done more" for the passage of the Constitution Amendment Bill in the Lok Sabha, Aruna Roy-led National Campaign for People's Right to Information (NCPRI) said today.

"We feel that Congress and UPA could have done more to get the bill passed. They did not really try hard to get the bill passed. BJP also changed its stand," Roy told reporters here.

Activist Nikhil Dey said the Lokpal is needed in present circumstances in the country and hoped the legislation is passed in the Rajya Sabha. "We never loose hope."

The lower house on Tuesday passed a historic bill to create a nine-member anti-corruption watchdog but the government suffered a major embarrassment when the legislation to give it a Constitutional status was defeated for want of requisite two-third majority.
