The second such incident in the last three days where criminals have brazenly shot at police personnel underlined the lack of fear among them of the rule of law.
On Saturday, three miscreants had opened fire on two policemen in Connaught Place area.
In today's incident, which took place just hundred meters away from the Vijay Vihar Police Station, Constable Jagbir Singh (42) died on the spot while his colleague Narendra (42) was injured in the incident, police said.
Jagbir had served in the Indian Army for 15 years and had joined Delhi Police in 2008.
This is the fourth such incident this year where a Delhi Police personnel has laid down his life in the line of duty.
"The incident took place around 1:30 AM when the two constables were on night patrol on their bike and they saw an auto moving suspiciously in L block, Gali no.7. Sensing something suspicious, the duo signalled the auto to stop but the driver did not comply. The policemen chased the auto and intercepted it. There were four occupants in the passenger seat besides the driver," said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer) Vikramjit Singh.
When the policemen questioned them, their activities were found to be suspicious. The duo then parked their bike on the spot and hung from both sides of the auto so that its occupants could not flee and directed its driver to take it to the police station to verify their identities, he said.
"On the way, one of the four occupants, sitting on the passenger seat, shot Jagbir in the chest. He then told Narendra that he was hit and asked him to go to Vijay Vihar police station to get back up while he tried to stop them.As Narendra ran toward the police station, the attackers shot him from behind and tried to flee in the auto. Despite bleeding profusely, Jagbir clung on to the auto for at least 50 meters before his grip weakened and he fell down," Singh said, adding that there was trail of blood left behind.
The criminals also took along with them Jagbir's service pistol.
