'Cons workers should be given holiday on May Day'

Tamil Nadu AITUC Construction Workers' Association urged the DMK Government to extend the holiday for construction workers also.

COIMBATORE: Lamenting that construction labourers alone were asked to work on May Day when the working class was given holiday, the Tamil Nadu AITUC Construction Workers' Association urged the DMK Government to extend the holiday for construction workers also.

The appeals made by the association to declare holiday on May day, being observed as Labourers' Day, fell on deaf ears of previous AIADMK regime, Association Secretary N Selvaraj alleged in a release.

Urging the ruling DMK government to declare holiday for the construction workers, Selvaraj sought to take stringent action against those, who were compelling them to work on this day.

Moreover, the government should also announce that the workers be paid three times the wages, if they were asked to work on that day, in case of contingency, he said. Selvaraj also reminded that former Chief Minister C N Annadurai was the first one to declare May Day as holiday in the entire country.
