Connors plans academy with Pawar's nephew
Jimmy Connors, former tennis champ, has joined hands with Maratha strongman Sharad Pawar’s nephew to set up a mega tennis academy.
The Jimmy Connors Tennis Academy, to be located on a 300-acre resort somewhere in the Pune-Mumbai and Goa triangle, is being promoted by Jayant Pawar, founder director Club Solaris, a Pune-based chain of fitness locations. Mr Pawar is the nephew of the Union agriculture minister.
The proposed tennis academy will share space with a spa, 100 top-end villas, an 18 hole PGA golf course and a five-star hotel. All of which will be marketed internationally by Sevills, regarded as the UKs posh estate agents as they specialise in marketing top-end properties.
For Jimmy Connors, who has never been to India before despite having grown up on the competitive tennis circuit with the Amritraj brothers, Vijay and Ashok, and the younger Ramesh Krishnan, the turnout was amazing.
I am shocked at the number of people who have come here today, he said, at the sprawling Club Solaris in Punes Koregaon Park on Wednesday. He was referring not to young tennis players who had naturally come to try and hit a few balls with the legend, but to their parents, and a whole lot of thrill seekers.
For Savills, this was a chance to make a statement. Neil Macleod, director, Savills, said they will market the entire project to the Indian diaspora or even to well-travelled Indians who have experienced top-end luxury. Solaris is forming a joint agency with Savills for renewable energy, called Solaris Energy.
In this venture, Savills will raise funds in Europe for this entity. Solaris, with its established presence and knowledge of the market in Maharashtra, will be the local face.
This is an informal agreement that we have with Solaris, a joint agency and it is not restricted to residential, leisure, commercial or retail. We will also work with Solaris in the area of renewable energy. We can raise funds in European markets for the renewable energy market. The agreement with Solaris over Solaris Energy will soon be in place, Mr Macleod said.
