TIRUCHIRAPALLI: Tension prevailed when Congress workers and some Pro-Tamil groups clashed here today after the latter allegedly damaged the party flagposts and posters, police said.

About 50 activists of the Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam and Nam Tamizhar Iyakkam broke Congress flagposts and damaged festoons and posters put up near the venue of a meeting convened by TNCC chief B S Gnanadesikan for partymen from Tiruchirapalli, Perambaur and Karur Lok Sabha constituencies.

The Congressmen retaliated and chased the groups with sticks for about a km.There was heated exchange and scuffle between the two groups, police said.

Congress workers then blocked road traffic demanding action against the groups. Gnanadesikan informed police and pacified his partymen. Police asked the pro-Tamil groups to disperse.
