Self-obsessed govt hell-bent on trivialising freedom fighters' sacrifices: Sonia Gandhi
Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Monday said the party would strongly oppose the “self-obsessed government’s efforts” to misinterpret historical facts and trivialize the sacrifices of the doyens of the freedom struggle. Congress and other opposition parties also reminded Prime Minister Narendra Modi of the dynasts within BJP after he spoke on “dynasty politics” in his Independence Day speech.

“Friends, we have achieved a great deal in the last 75 years, but today’s self-obsessed government is bent on trivialising the great sacrifices of our freedom fighters and the glorious achievements of the country, which can never be accepted. The Congress will strongly oppose any misrepresentation of historical facts and every attempt to spread falsehoods about great leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Abul Kalam Azad for political gains,” Gandhi said in her Independence Day message.

While Modi speaking about corruption and “dynasty politics” is being seen as a move to brew BJP’s electoral plank for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections against Congress and most of the regional parties led and controlled by families, Congress spokesman Pawan Khera tried to strike a brave face by referring to BJP dynasts. “The home minister’s son, without displaying any cricketing skills, is holding an important post in cricket. The external affairs minister’s son, though not in IFS, is heading a think tank. Then there is son of the defence minister. Also, there is a civil aviation minister. The PM, it seems, is sending an internal message to his own ministerial colleagues,” said Khera.

The Trinamool and TRS leaders also said the PM must first focus on the dynastic trends within BJP.
