Congress, after emerging as the single largest party in Meghalaya, has staked claim to form the government in the state.

According to a Times Now report, the party leaders handed over the letter to form the government to Governor Ganga Prasad.

Congress won in 21 seats whereas the Conrad Sangma-led NPP came a close second at 19.


The Congress party will hold a meeting at 11 am to elect Congress Legislature Party leader in Meghalaya, according to ANI.

Congress party had rushed in senior leaders Kamal Nath, Mukul Wasnik and Ahmed Patel on Saturday to Meghalaya to facilitate government formation talks.

On the other hand, NPP leader Conrad Sangma has expressed confidence that his party will form the government in Meghalaya.

The BJP and its alliance partner IPFT which swept Tripura and emerged as kingmaker in Nagaland won only 2 seats in Meghalaya.

Meghalaya Congress working president Vincent H Pala expressed confidence that regional parties such as the United Democratic Party, which won six seats, and the People's Democratic Front, which bagged four, will join the Congress.

"We are in talks. We hope that they will join us," Pala said.

The National People's Party (NPP) and its ally at the Centre and in Manipur, the BJP, together won 21 seats, though they contested independently.

The BJP has also sent its leader from Assam, H B Sarma, to the Meghalaya capital to help the ally form a government.
