LUCKNOW: Congress today staged a protest here to press for declaring Uttar Pradesh as drought-hit state.

The Congress workers, led by UPCC president Nirmal Khatri and senior party leader Rita Bahuguna Joshi, raised slogans against the Akhilesh government and later handed over a memorandum addressed to the Governor to the city magistrate, according to a statement.

Khatri said because of the scanty rains, farmers are facing immense problems but the state government was still happy.

"The kharif crop has been damaged following the government's inability to provide adequate power," he said.

He demanded the state government to immediately start relief works to redress the problems of farmers arising out of drought like situation and compensate their losses.
