Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman slammed Karnataka's Congress leader Siddaramaiah for his derision about BJP, saying the future of the state is in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's hands and terming the Congress "ghulams" (slaves) of one family.

"They forget, they used to say Sonia Gandhi is everything for Bharat," she said at a press conference in Kalburgi. The Congress, she said, did not think about Kannadigas when they sacked their own CM Veerendra Patil.

Sitharaman said Congress leaders were liars by character and that they never fulfilled their promises in any of the states they were elected. "It is necessary to understand the intentions behind the promises. Some people just make promises for the sake of winning elections," she said, taking a dig at the guarantees the Congress has offered as part of its campaign. She praised the government for bringing down the consumer price index inflation to 5.7% from 6%.
