The Congress slammed the Centre, Haryana government and BJP over the tear-gassing of agitating farmers at Shambhu border on Thursday when they tried to reach Delhi.

"After the martyrdom of more than 700 farmers, the Modi government had promised legal guarantees of MSP (minimum support price) and that turned out to be the biggest betrayal of the farmers. Today again, when farmers were coming to Delhi via Haryana to demand their rights, the Haryana Police fired teargas shells at them at the Shambhu border," All India Congress Committee general secretary Randeep Surjewala said on Sunday.

"The 'anti-farmer' BJP forgives lakhs and crores of rupees of capitalists just like that... but is not ready to give farmers a fair price for the crop grown with their blood and sweat... The Modi government, steeped in loot and profiteering, is increasing the cost of farming day by day... But every time when farmers demand their rights for their hard work, BJP spreads thorns and nails in the path of the food-providers, showers sticks and shells on them. Is this the 'New India'?" he said.
