Congress primary system to make a comeback in Mumbai civic polls
MUMBAI: Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi’s much-hyped primary system of selecting candidates and then giving them tickets to contest the Lok Sabha polls might not have worked in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls.

However, the system is set to make a return this time for the Mumbai civic elections which is just seven months away.

Mumbai Congress chief Sanjay Nirupam is set to replicate the system by having all the 227 candidates of the Congress getting tickets through the primary system, which means grassroots Congress workers would decide who would be the best candidate for contesting in a ward.

“The mandate given by Rahulji is to involve more and more grassroots workers, we are hence looking at getting the people/grassroots workers decide who would be the best Congress candidate.

This will mean the grassroots worker, who has not been able to contest the elections till now, will be able to contest the polls, this will bring in new blood in our party.” said Sanjay Nirupam.
