Congress not concerned about price rise, says BJP

With the UPA government concentrating on the emerging political situation over its commitment to the India-US nuclear deal, spiralling price rise took a back seat.

NEW DELHI: With the UPA government concentrating on the emerging political situation over its commitment to the India-US nuclear deal, spiralling price rise took a back seat. This even as inflation rate reached 11.89%. There was more bad news, the industrial production was down to 3.8% per cent, the slowest pace in six years.

While the ruling Congress and the Left were silent on the state of affairs, the BJP reiterated its claim that the Congress-led UPA government was incapable of dealing with price rise. For his part, finance minister P Chidambaram has suggested that right attitude and patience could help the country face the problems of soaring inflation.

The Congress silence on uncontrolled spiralling price rise, and the finance minister call for right attitude and patience is being exploited by the BJP in its campaign against the UPA government. The BJP claimed that the UPA government is stuck on the nuclear deal and is unconcerned about price rise.

The BJP has been building on the theme of how the Congress-led government, which came to power on the aam aadmi slogan, had done nothing but betray them.

In the coming days, as the country moves towards general election , BJP slogans like the Congress makes you pay or Congress ka haath, aam aadmi ke saath vishwasghat (the Congress hand, betrayal of the common man) a play on the Congress slogan during the 14th Lok Sabha election are likely to be used. The governments attempt at controlling inflation through monetary measures seem to have had little impact.
