Congress leader's residence attacked in Assam
Karbi Longri National Liberation Front militants hurled a grenade in the house of a Congress leader in Central Assam's Karbi Anglong district.
The DIG of Assam police, Mr Jiban Singh told ET: "A grenade was lobbed at the house of Congress leader and Karbi Anglong District Autonomous Council member Ratan Ingti at Deuthai at about 1.30 am. Police deployed at his home fired in retaliation. Mr Ingti was there when the grenade was hurled but he is safe."
In view of the dismal law and order situation in North Cachar Hills and KarbiAnglong districts, Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has rescheduled the timing of number of trains on Tuesday.
The militants have recently targeted railway tracks, passenger trains as the soft target. Both the hill districts which fall under Autonomous district Lok Sabha constituency will go to polls on April 16.
Upper Assam bound trains moving from Guwahati trudge through the KarbiAnglong district. Chief public relations officer of NFR, S Hajong told ET, "Extra precaution has been taken to ensure that there is no untoward incident.
Already a pilot engine, which is a part of the security drill, moves ahead of any major train in the section. The deployment of security personnel along the track has been increased.
In a major relief to the security forces, the 48-hour bandh called by the KLNLF militant outfit from April 15 has been called off.
