Congress Leader Rahul Gandhi questions terms of disengagement; alleges PM Modi has ‘given’ 1,000 kms to China

The Congress on Wednesday questioned the terms of the disengagement of troops at the Sino-China border and claimed that India's national interest was compromised in the process. Party leader Rahul Gandhi accused PM Modi of having given 1,000 sq km of territory to China "without a fight" and demanded to know when the status quo ante of April 2020 would be re-established at the border. The main Opposition party's criticism on the border issue, notably, comes ahead of the scheduled meeting between PM Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Gandhi posted his critique on Twitter: "China has refused to accept India's demand of restoring status quo of April 2020. PM has given 1,000 sq km of territory to China without a fight. Can GOI explain how this territory will be retrieved?" Later, the AICC held a news briefing to argue that the terms of disengagement resulted in Indian troops being made to withdraw from some traditional patrolling points.

"This is an important topic about the PP-15 and disengagement at Hot Springs. This is not the first time that we are disengaging and making buffer zones where we were patrolling. Why is our army being made to give up patrolling points?," asked Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate.
