Congress' impeachment motion petition was to pressure judges handling Gandhi family case: PM

The PM said the impeachment notice was a ‘pressure tactic’ against lower court judges who were hearing the National Herald case.

MUMBAI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has alleged that the Congress petition for an impeachment motion against the Chief Justice of India was meant to pressure high court judges hearing the National Herald case. Speaking at a BJP function in Mumbai on the 43rd anniversary of Emergency, Modi slammed the Congress and the Gandhi family for the atrocities committed during Emergency.

“No one thought that a charge could be framed against them, so they found a solution. They decided to move a motion to impeach the top-most judge of the Supreme Court so that subordinate judges handling their case would be under pressure,” Modi alleged. The charges against the CJI were ‘laughable’ he said. “If you look at the impeachment notice and the charges which were brought against him, you would laugh,” he said.

Modi said that the Gandhi family and Congress used the impeachment motion against the CJI and raised a ruckus over the EVM machines because it wanted to stay in power. “The whole world praises our election commission. All the parties, in spite of our differences, always congratulates the EC for the way it conducts polls. However, the Congress which was once in power in all panchayats and in Parliament cannot reconcile that it seats have come down from 400 to 44,” he said, adding that the Congress has stopped making noises about the EVM after Karnataka polls.

Modi alleged that the impeachment motion and the EVM showed that the Congress continued to possess the same mindset it had during the Emergency.

“Their outlook towards institutions in the country have always been the same. Will the country’s democracy be safe under them? Can the judiciary work under them with pride,” he asked.

On the legislation to ban instant triple talaq Modi alleged that while the government wanted Muslim women to enjoy the same rights as other women in the country, “the Congress with an eye on losing power decided to play vote bank politics as they are worried about power.”

Explaining the reasons to keep the memory of Emergency alive, Modi said “today’s generation may not know what Emergency is. Only when you lose your personal liberty would you know it. No one would have thought that for power and blind servility of people towards a family, democracy and the Constitution would be subverted and the whole country would be turned into one big jail,” Modi alleged.

“Everyone was afraid due to an atmosphere of fear; people were told your name was in MISA. See the shrewdness of this family!”
