Congress ditched DMK at first opportunity, has become a ‘parasitic party’: Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday termed the Congress a “parasitic party”, accusing it of betraying long-time ally M. K. Stalin-led DMK by aligning with TVK after benefiting from the regional party’s support for decades.

Addressing a public meeting in Bengaluru, Modi said the Congress had repeatedly depended on the DMK to survive politically, particularly during the 10-year UPA regime before 2014.

“Today, the Congress has earned the image of a parasitic party. At the very first opportunity, it betrays even its allies,” Modi said. “For 25-30 years, Congress shared a close relationship with the DMK. The alliance rescued Congress from crises many times.”


He said the UPA government at the Centre survived because of the DMK’s support and alleged that the Congress abandoned the alliance once political equations changed.

“The DMK stood by Congress through thick and thin for 25-30 years and worked for its benefit at every stage. But the moment circumstances changed, the power-hungry Congress stabbed the DMK in the back at the first opportunity,” he said.

The Prime Minister also targeted the Congress leadership over its handling of post-election developments in southern states. He alleged that Congress leaders in Delhi were misleading people over the May 4 election results, claiming there was confusion over government formation in Tamil Nadu while the party was also struggling to decide leadership issues in Kerala despite electoral gains.

Referring to recent election outcomes, Modi said the results reflected growing support for the NDA and the BJP across the country.

“The NDA forming the government in Puducherry for a second consecutive term, forming the government in Assam for the third straight time, and the BJP receiving unprecedented support in West Bengal are all significant developments,” he said.

He also cited the BJP’s performance in the recent Gujarat local body polls, claiming the party had broken all previous electoral records in panchayat and municipal elections.

“These are historic developments that are creating a new chapter in India’s political history,” Modi said.

Recalling his earlier visits to Karnataka, Modi said this was the first time such a large public gathering had been organised at Bengaluru airport premises.

“Today, I can see a saffron sun rising from the land of Bengaluru. Only BJP workers can gather in such huge numbers in an organised manner so early in the morning,” he said.
