Congress demonstration before Tata project in Singur
Congress supporters on Sunday staged demonstrations in front of Tata Motor's small car project site here while a section of them entered the factory premises and posted party flags.
Police said the activists led by former MLA Abdul Mannan assembled near the site and raised slogans demanding return of 400 acres of land taken from unwilling farmers for the project.
Some partymen forcibly entered the project site and raised slogans against the state government. They also hoisted party flags inside the project site before policemen drove them out, they said.
Mannan told reporters, "State government should immediately sit with the farmers and settle the issue. We will go for bigger movement demanding the return of the land acquired from unwilling farmers."
The Congress demonstration came a day after Union Minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi called for unconditional talks among the Tatas, state government and farmers' representatives on the vexed issue of 400 acres of land.
CPI-M's youth wing, DYFI also held a rally near Singur railway station in support of the project for creation of jobs and condemning the "Trinamool Congress's effort to create chaos over the issue."
