KOLKATA: The opposition Congress today demanded that the state government should declare West Bengal as drought-hit due to the prolonged heat wave which resulted in the ground water level receding fast.

Raising the issue during mention-hour, Congress member Manas Bhuniya while drawing attention of the Treasury Bench said that in many parts of the state drinking water had become scarce.

Not only that, farmers were unable to draw enough water for farming, giving them a hard time, Bhuniya said adding if such a situation continued for a long time, there could be a crisis in the supply of vegetables.

Delay in monsoon could also affect the agricultural production, Bhuniya pointed out asking the state government to act immediately.
