Congress condemns police atrocity on Mamata

Mamata, who had also addressed the rally, said her party will struggle hard to make the October 9 bandh a grand success.

KOLKATA: After a long gap, Congress leaders in West Bengal shared a platform with Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday to oppose police atrocity on her.

Congress leaders like the Union minister for information and broadcasting Priya Ranjan Dasmunshi, Congress Legislative Party (CLP) leader in the state legislature Manas Bhunia, party MLAs Somen Mitra and Sudip Banerjee had addressed a rally organised by the Trinamool Congress to condemn police atrocity on Mamata.

The Trinamool Congress chief was forced to leave Singur in Hooghly district on Monday night by the district police when she had been holding a demonstration to stop disbursement of cheques among those farmers whose land the government had taken for the Tata Motors small car unit. Mamata has also given a call for 24 hour Bangla Bandh on October 9 to condemn the incident.

Addressing the rally attended by both Congress and Trinamool Congress supporters, Mr Dasmunshi asked the chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee to convene an all-party meeting to discuss the land acquisition issue. “We are not against industrialisation, but we don’t want the government to acquire farm land for setting up industrial units,” the Union minister said.

The CLP leader Dr Manas Bhunia said that both Sonia Gandhi and CPIM all-India general secretary Prakash Karat had cautioned about acquisition of farm land for urbanisation and industrialisation. “But Karat’s party leaders in West Bengal are busy taking over agricultural land at Singur. We don’t understand why the chief minister is not looking for non-agricultural land at Singur,’ the CLP leader said.

Mamata, who had also addressed the rally, said her party will struggle hard to make the October 9 bandh a grand success. “By making the bandh a total success we will show Bhattacharjee that people of West Bengal does not want acquisition of farm land. Neither the people of our state approve the police action on our men at Singur,” Ms Banerjee told the gathering.

Bhattacharjee when asked to comment on the Trinamool-sponsored Bandh, told reporters at Writers’ buildings that “They (Trinamool) don’t know what mistakes they are doing (by opposing the industrialisation drive)”.

Political observers, however, feel that the Congress leadership is very cleverly trying to influence Mamata Banerjee to quit the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and share same platforms with the Congress in future.
