NEW DELHI: The Congress on Monday backed the demand by the Hathras incident victim’s family for a Supreme Court-monitored judicial inquiry, rather than a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe, into the incident.

The party has also opposed the continued presence at the victim’s village of the personnel of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted earlier by the state government. It reiterated its demand for the suspension of the Hathras district magistrate.

The Congress leaders and party workers on Monday held a ‘satyagrah’ at the district headquarters and state capitals, to protest against the Hathras incident, the handling of the matter by the Yogi Adityanath government and sought justice for the victim’s family members.

Congress spokesperson Sushmita Dev urged the state government to accept the family members’ demand for proving that the body that was hastily cremated by the police by using fuel was actually that of the victim and, if so, hand over the ashes to them “for conducting a dignified ritual as per their customs and culture.”
