Congress accepts Deshmukh's resignation

NEW DELHI: The ruling Congress party on Wednesday accepted Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh's resignation over charges that the state government failed to prevent last week's attacks in Mumbai, television channels reported.

Deshmukh had on Monday offered to resign as chief minister after at least 171 people were killed in a three-day rampage at luxury hotels, the city���s main railway station and a Jewish centre in Mumbai.

His deputy RR Patil has already been sacked.
