The Congress suspended its Lok Sabha member Preneet Kaur, wife of former party chief minister-turned-BJP leader Captain Amarinder Singh, from the party on Friday by charging her with anti-party activities. The action had been increasingly expected ever since Singh left the party in October 2021.

The leadership will soon expel her from the party and then the floor leadership could move a petition with the Lok Sabha Speaker, seeking her disqualification from the House under the provisions of the anti-defection law, said people with knowledge of the matter.

All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary Tari Anwar, member secretary of the AICC Disciplinary Action Committee (DAC), announced Kaur's suspension. He said the party leadership had received a complaint from Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president, who alleged that Kaur, Congress MP from Patiala, “is indulging in anti-party activities to help the BJP”.

It is no secret that Kaur has been sympathising with her husband’s breakaway Punjab Lok Congress Party, which was subsequently merged with the BJP, since the 2022 Punjab assembly polls.
