Cong for contesting AP polls together with friendly parties

With elections round the corner in Andhra Pradesh, the state Congress has extended an olive branch to friendly parties to again come together to repeat the success of 2004.

NEW DELHI: With elections round the corner in Andhra Pradesh, the state Congress has extended an olive branch to friendly parties to again come together to repeat the success of 2004.

"This being the election year, my aim and desire is to ensure unity of the party as a whole in the state and also friendly parties come together as far as possible," newly elected PCC Chief D Srinivas told reporters after meeting Congress President Sonia Gandhi here today.

Observing that it was upto to the political parties to accept and reciprocate, he said he discussed the issue with leaders of CPI(M) and CPI.

"I have expressed my desire that we should all be together. I am nobody to force anybody. As a good gesture, I made the offer and it is not a compulsion," Srinivas said.

His observation has come at a time when the TRS with which the Congress had fought the last assembly and Lok Sabha polls together has parted ways on the issue of separate Telangana and is targeting the Congress for "betraying" the Telangana cause.

To a question on the Telangana issue, he said the UPA sub-committee was looking into the issue and the state party has nothing to do with it. At the best the state party could express its feeling to the Central leadership on the issue, he said.
