Cong asks Centre to dissolve Karnataka Assembly

The Congress on Monday asked the Centre to dissolve the Karnataka Assembly for holding elections in the state to prevent "imminent" horse trading.

NEW DELHI: The Congress on Monday asked the Centre to dissolve the Karnataka Assembly for holding elections in the state to prevent "imminent" horse trading.

"The Union Government should dissolve the assembly forthwith and allow the state to proceed to elections to prevent imminent horse trading as admitted by Deve Gowda himself," Congress Spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi told reporters here.

"It is ironical that those who are allowing horse trading to avoid elections are accusing us of horse trading," he said.

"The Congress is concerned about this huge and irreversible prejudicial impact of all these unholy antics upon the state, one of India's most prosperous states has been afflicted with paralysis," he added.

Asked why the Centre had not taken the step earlier, Singhvi said the Government, in difference to the spirit of the Bommai and Bihar judgements, did not dissolve the assembly and put it in suspended animation despite the common stand of all parties, including Congress JD-S and BJP that only an election could lead to a workable majority.

"The Karnataka soap opera continues unabated. Its is a sorry saga of corruption, horse trading, mismanagement, political opportunism, hypocrisy and unholy alliances," he added.
