Guwahati: The Congress and five other opposition parties announced the formation of a grand alliance months ahead of the assembly polls in Assam.

The parties, including the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), CPI, CPI (M), CPI (ML) and Anchalik Gana Morcha, said they had decided to team up to oust the ruling BJP from power in the state polls, which are likely to be held in April.

Chhattisgarh chief minister and All India Congress Committee (AICC) observer Bhupesh Baghel, along with other observers announced the formation of the grand alliance in Guwahati on Tuesday.

“People have seen much-touted Gujarat model. In Congress-ruled Chhattisgarh, we have fulfilled 24 promises made to the people out of 36 promises,” said Baghel. “In October last year, GST collection of Chhattisgarh was highest in the country. Chhattisgarh is one state where people get money even by selling cow dung.”
