NEW DELHI: Concern was expressed by a BJP member in the Lok Sabha over the spate of sucides by farmers in Karnataka.

Raising the issue during Zero Hour, B Sriramulu alleged that a large number of farmers are commiting suicide as the state government had failed to provide enough support to the farming community despite assurances.

His party colleague member Hukum Singh spoke about the need for a fair deal to the sugarcane growers expecially in Uttar Pradesh.

The cane growers are suffering for want of adquate relief, he said, wondering as to where the Rs 6,000 crore package given for the sugar industry has gone.

Another BJP member Janardan Mishra made a strong plea for better health facilities in the rural areas saying the countryside lacks such facilities as doctors prefer to work in the cities.

Udit Raj, also of the BJP, was critical of the management of IIT Roorkee for throwing out 67 students.
