Complete land survey in Assam: Hari Shankar Brahma to state government

GUWAHATI: Former Chairman of the Committee for Protection of Land Rights of Indigenous People of Assam and former Chief Election Commissioner of India Hari Shankar Brahma has suggested measures for ensuring land possession by landless indigenous people like completing land surveys in the state.

He congratulated Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal for the historic initiative to distribute more than one lakh land pattas (certificate) to landless indigenous families by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 23.

He thanked the State Government led by Chief Minister Sonowal for the remarkable step to distribute land pattas to a total of 3 lakh 34 thousand landless indigenous families of the state in the last four years and said that such an initiative would ensure indigenous people’s control over the land of the State.


In an email, Hari Shankar Brahma suggested few more measures for ensuring land possession by landless indigenous people like completing land surveys in the state. Only proper land surveys can give an exact estimate of available lands in the state for settling the landless indigenous population, he wrote. He also lauded the efforts of the State Government in this regard and said that such steps would give confidence to local people of Assam about preservation of their identity and land rights.

The Assam government has formulated Land Policy 2019 following the recommendation of Brahma Committee on Protection of Land Rights of Indigenous People.
