Complaint against Sonia in US court an act of cowardice: Capt Amarinder Singh

CHANDIGARH: The complaint filed against Congress President Sonia Gandhi by a Sikh rights group in the USA was a "disgusting and condemnable" attempt to wrongfully blame her for the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, former Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh said today.

In a statement here today, Singh said that the complaint against Gandhi had been lodged with clearly mala fide intentions.

"It defies logic to complain against someone who was nowhere near the government at the time of the riots," Singh said referring to Sonia.

In its lawsuit filed against Gandhi, members of US rights group Sikhs for Justice are seeking damages against the Congress President for her role in shielding and protecting Sajjan Kumar, Jagdish Tytler and other party leaders accused of leading attacks on members of the Sikh community following former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's assassination in 1984.

Referring to the above charge, Singh pointed out that Gandhi does not control the courts where all the accused were now facing trial.

Singh said it was highly condemnable that SFJ members had resorted to such tactics for cheap publicity at a time when Gandhi was in the USA for health reasons.

"This is just an act of cowardice which no Sikh can support or approve of," Singh said.
