Compensation to Muzaffarnagar gangrape victim
MUZAFFARNAGAR: A compensation of Rs five lakh has been provided by district administration to a victim of gangarape during communal riots last year, in compliance with a Supreme Court order, a senior official said today.

District Magistrate Koshal Raj Sharma said here today that on the direction of state government, Rs five lakh has been provided to the victim in a gang rape case in which the Special Investigation Team ( SIT) had filed an FIR against five accused at Phugana village.

The development came after the apex court issued contempt of court notice against the state government and directed the SIT officials to appear before it on a plea by the victim.

The court had ordered in March this year that compensation be provided to all rape victims but the woman was not provided relief after which she moved the court.

The woman claimed that the SIT had given a clean chit to the accused based on an earlier statement she had made under duress.

She had alleged that the accused had threatened her of dire consequences if she admitted of being raped.
