Commonwealth SG Mckinnon meets Musharraf

Commonwealth SG Don McKinnon holds talks with Pak President Musharraf on political developments in the country.

ISLAMABAD: Commonwealth Secretary General Don McKinnon on Wednesday held talks with President Pervez Musharraf on political developments in Pakistan, a day after the General pledged to shed uniform if re-elected for a five-year term.

McKinnon met Musharraf soon after his arrival here on a three-day visit to "seek an assessment of political developments in Pakistan," specially the General's plans to relinquish the post of Army Chief, state-run media reported.

The chief of the 53-nation Commonwealth, which had expelled Pakistan for five years after Musharraf seized power in a bloodless military coup in 1999 and has set a year-end deadline for him to become a civilian leader, also met Foreign Minister Khurshid M Kasuri.

During the course of his visit, "the Secretary General will enquire about plans for the elections to the National and Provincial Assemblies (in Pakistan) due to be held in the next few months," a Commonwealth statement said.

McKinnon would also hold talks with Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz and leaders of opposition parties.

A day before Mckinnon's visit, Musharraf's lawyers told the Supreme Court that he would quit as the Army Chief if re-elected as President.
