NEW DELHI: The high-powered committee set up to suggest ways to reduce air and water pollution, chaired by chief secretary SK Srivastava, is exploring the possibility of introducing colour-coded stickers for cars to differentiate between the ones with a pollution under control ( PUC) certificate and the ones which don't have it.

Only those with the colour-coded sticker will be allowed to refuel at petrol pumps.

The transport department is studying the suggestion as a follow-up to the committee's earlier recommendation for making a valid PUC mandatory for refuelling at petrol pumps.

The commissioner, food and supplies, SS Yadav had written to all major oil companies, including IOCL, HPCL and BPCL, for implementing the recommendations.

And last month, at a meeting, these companies argued that checking of a valid PUC of each and every vehicle was not possible. They said it would be time-consuming and was an impractical proposition for the employee deployed for refuelling.

They had suggested that the PUC certificate should be colour-coded quarter-wise for easy detection. They also suggested that stickers of the colour code be issued and stuck on the vehicle.

The oil companies have also requested that land-owning agencies and civic agencies should allow more PUC centres to come up at petrol pumps.

Currently civic agencies object to these temporary kiosks at many petrol pumps and thus all filling stations don't provide the facility.

The representatives also raised the issue of stricter enforcement by the transport department and a focused awareness drive for vehicle owners.

At Friday's review meeting, the committee asked the transport department to study the proposal and see if introduction of colour coding and issuance of PUC on a quarterly basis was possible.
