NEW DELHI: Most parts of the country woke up to a freezing Tuesday morning, as cold wave gripped many parts of northern and western India.

Severe cold wave conditions returned to north India, including Delhi-NCR, while Mumbai experienced the coldest morning of the winter season so far.

Mumbai's two representative observatories - Colaba in the city and Santacruz, a suburb, recorded minimum temperatures of 17°C and 15°C respectively, 3 degrees below their normal values. Hill stations Matheran (17°) and Mahabaleshwar (14.9°), popular weekend getaway spots close to the island city saw similar temperatures as well.

However, isolated pockets around the city such as Powai and Goregaon saw the mercury dip to 13°C. The low temperatures will persist on Wednesday, before rising by the new year's day, the weather office said.
