Delhi weather worsens: cold breeze and dense fog in capital; temperatures drop across North India

North India woke up to severe cold conditions on Thursday morning with temperature dropping down to 7 degree Celsius in the national capital.

"Cold day conditions at isolated pockets are likely to continue over Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, West Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim during next 24 hours," the Meteorological Department said.

The MeT attributed the cold conditions to cyclonic circulation that lies over Iran & neighborhood between 3.1 and 5.8 km above mean sea level. "It is likely to cause isolated to scattered rain/snow over the Western Himalayan Region during 19th & 20th December. This Western Disturbance is not likely to cause any significant weather over the plains of northwest India."


Dense fog engulfed the national capital region. According to the update of the India Meteorological Department on Thursday, dense fog has developed over Delhi with visibility of 50-150 mt at many places.

Gradual fall in minimum temperatures by 2-3°C is expected most likely over east India during next 2-3 days.

Experts believe that Cold weather in northern India will boost yields of winter-sown or rabi grains, oil seeds and pulses, increasing the country’s food output to a new high, although conditions are not very good for vegetable.

At IGI Airport, low visibility procedures were implemented on Thursday morning. Flight disruptions are expected. Airport authorities have urged passengers to contact the airline concerned for updated flight information.
