Coimbatore blasts: Three get life sentence

COIMBATORE: The founder-leader of Al-Umma, S A Basha, and its general secretary Mohammed Ansari are among the three persons who were given life sentence by a city court.

S A Basha and Mohammed Ansari are among the 70 who were convicted by special judge K Uthirapathi on August one last after being found guilty.

Of the 166 people arrested in connection with the blasts, triggered on February 14, 1998 during the visit of senior BJP leader L K Advani, 158 were convicted while eight others, including Kerala-based PDP leader, Abdul Nasser Madhani, were acquitted as charges against them could not be proved.

Of these 158 people, 88 were convicted of minor charges like attempt to murder and possessing explosives, were sentenced to undergo imprisonment ranging from 21 months to nine years. As they had already served their prison term as undertrials, the judge had ordered their release.

As many as 58 people had lost their lives in the blasts. Besides beefed up security, movement of public and vehicles would also be restricted around the court, police said.

Armed guards were posted at sensitive places, besides intensifying vehicle checks on border areas. Pickets were set up at vantage points and mobile patrolling was intensified, they said.
