NEW DELHI: The lead coal scam investigator in CBI, IPS officer Ravi Kant, has been given an extension of two years on central deputation by the government.

The agency is probing 14 cases in the coal scam and is set to file more cases though not a single charge-sheet has been filed so far. This order by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) was communicated to CBI Director Ranjit Sinha on November 19, extending the deputation tenure effectively from September 24, 2013 for the next two years.

Kant had been specially put back on the coal scam probe earlier this year in May upon orders from the Supreme Court. He was brought back to CBI from the Intelligence Bureau where he had proceeded to in April.

“Approval of the Competent Authority is hereby conveyed to the extension in the deputation tenure of Ravi Kant, IPS, (Orissa cadre of 1998), presently reappointed as DIG in CBI (from Intelligence Bureau for the purpose of enquiry and investigation into allocation of Coal Blocks) for a period of 2 years from September 24, 2013 to September 23, 2015,” the DoPT order said.
