CM forms panel to push Metro project

The Maharashtra govt has finally applied itself to solving the many problems hindering the Metro Rail project.

MUMBAI: The Maharashtra government has finally applied itself to solving the many problems hindering the Metro Rail project. The state government on Monday decided to set up a steering committee under chief secretary Johny Joseph to look into the problems in land acquisition for the Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar corridor.

Work on the corridor was supposed to begin from October 2006 after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh inaugurated the project in June that year.

However, the row involving land acquisition has stalled work for more than a year. The Rs 2,356-crore corridor is the first of the nine corridors that the Rs 19,525-crore Metro Project plans to build.

Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh asked a review meeting on Monday to discuss difficulties being faced by the authorities. “Areas like Wadala, Marol fire station, Golibar road, Saki Naka and Subhash Nagar have reported some problems in land acquisition. These need to be looked into,” the CM told officials concerned. Mr Deshmukh exuded hope that if people protesting land acquisition were taken into confidence, there could be some breakthrough for the project.
