GUWAHATI: All Assam Students Union (Aasu) along with 28 organisations hit the streets in Guwahati against Citizenship (Amendment) bill 2016.

Once a student leader, Sonowal has being maintaining that he will not do anything which is against the interest of Assam.


Aasu said that Sonowal has stated earlier that he will clarify his stand on the bill after the final draft National Register of citizens (NRC) is published. “It is more than two months now Sonowal is yet to state his stand on the bill.Final draft NRC was published on July 30.”

Aasu adviser Samujjal Bhattacharyya while addressing the protest rally in Guwahati said, “It is just a warning demonstration. We urge the Chief Minister to say no to the Bill. However, if the government goes ahead with its agenda to execute the bill, none sitting in Dispur will be spared.”

He said that BJP came to power in Assam two years back promising change. “Nothing has changed in last two years. Illegal immigrants from Bangladeshis are supposed to leave the state. But it did not happen. The indigenous people are supposed to get constitutional safeguard. However, nothing happened. The indigenous people are being tortured by the move to execute the proposed constitutional amendment bill.”

Aasu President, Dipank Kumar Nath added it will continue to protest till the bill is withdrawn. “Centre is insulting us.”

The bill aimed at making minority communities such as Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan eligible for applying for Indiancitizenship is under the consideration of Joint parliamentary committee of both the Houses.
