Delhi: Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal says, "I sometimes wonder why this government is pushing the country towards darkness. Is the government so afraid that if young people gather at Jantar Mantar, it requires the deployment of 28 battalions—including 23 battalions of the CRPF and the Delhi Police—to stop them? Are the citizens of our country the government's enemies? Every citizen of India has the constitutional right to protest against the government. This right has been granted to us by the Constitution, not by the government. How, then, can the government take away this constitutional right of the citizens? The Constitution and the law do contain provisions allowing for restrictions—under relevant legal sections—if the country's integrity is threatened or a serious public order issue arises. Previously, Section 144 was invoked for this purpose, whereas now, such orders can be issued under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS)..."
